Wenatchee Police responded to reports of a man assaulting an employee of Lighthouse Ministries around 9:00 am Friday.

Captain Brain Chance said 23-year-old Jose Gomez then fled on foot towards the area of Thurston Street and Worthen Street.

Gomez then continued into the Columbia river in an attempt to elude police.

"Once the subject had entered the water, Wenatchee Police officers at the scene continually tried to negotiate with him to exit the water due to the extremely cold conditions. He was unwilling to do so." Chance explained, "After about 10 minutes he did finally, on his own accord, come back to shore and was taken into custody."

Local medical personnel and members of Chelan County Fire District 1 treated Gomez at the scene.

Gomez was then taken to Central Washington Hospital before being released and booked into the Chelan County Jail and charges of simple assault, assault 3rd, burglary 2nd, possession of meth and felony harassment.
