Crews from Chelan Fire & Rescue knocked down a brush fire on Hidden Lane in Chelan just after 8:30 Thursday morning.

Chief Mark Donnell said the fire reached a half acre and threatened a nearby PUD pole, but was quickly contained.

"In talking with the property owner, he believes how it started was he was basically chipping away on concrete for his site and was pretty sure that one of those (rocks) got away and caused the spark," explained Donnell.

Donnell added that if you're planning work that could case a spark, such as rock chipping or activities that are metal-on-metal or metal-on-rock, push those plans back until after fire conditions improve. He also said the fire had the potential to be much bigger, but Chelan Fire & Rescue's ability to staff and respond rapidly to these types of incidents was much of the reason the brush fire did not seriously spread. The blaze was contained and extinguished within 3 minutes.
