A 27-year-old climber fell to his death outside of Leavenworth Friday.

Chelan County Sheriff's Corporal Lee Risdon said the tragic accident occurred southwest of Leavenworth in the area of Bruce's Boulder around 7:00 pm.

"He was climbing a rock face and he was setting his own anchors into the wall as he climbed." detailed Risdon, "When he neared the top of the summit of the area he was climbing he fell backwards and it actually pulled the previous three anchors that he put into the rock out and he landed head-first into the ground below."

Risdon added that the unidentified victim's companions were all experienced climbers and performed CPR until medics arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Life Flight helicopter was initially called to the scene, prompting the closure of a portion of Icicle Road.
