The U.S. Forest Service has proposed the building of a new trail along the south shore of Lake Chelan.

The project draft calls for the development of 6.5 miles of non-motorized trail which would run immediately parallel to the lake near 25 Mile Creek State Park, and would also include the construction of a parking lot and restrooms.

Officials with the Chelan Ranger District say the trail would assist in meeting the growing demand for non-motorized trail opportunities in the vicinity and increase access to the lake.

A proposal for a similar trail was initially approved over 20 years ago but was never realized due to the forest service’s inability to procure the necessary land from private ownership.

The latest plan is located entirely on public lands and groundbreaking for the project could begin as early as next month with a projected completion date of late 2024.
