King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn is launching a campaign for the 8th Congressional District House seat now held by Democrat Kim Schrier in the 2022 midterms.

The Seattle Times reports Dunn, who is a Republican, confirmed his candidacy Monday morning in a phone interview.

Dunn said President Biden and the Democratically controlled Congress are making the country weaker.

His mother, Jennifer Dunn, previously represented the districts as a Republican for six terms from 1993 through 2005.

The 8th district includes Chelan and Kittitas counties in North Central Washington.

The Seattle Times reports a Schrier campaign spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Dunn announcement could bring a high profile congressional race in a swing district that was held by Republicans until Schrier flipped it for Democrats in 2018.

Coincidentally, a new poll released Monday has already surveyed a race between Dunn and Schrier, with Dunn holding a 40% to 36% lead.

Dunn’s lead is within the 5 percent margin for error in the survey from national polling group Moore Information Group.

Five Thirty Eight gives Moore Information Group a grade between a B and a C for its accuracy, and rates it with a small bias toward Republicans.

The 8th District boundaries will change under the once every decade redistricting process. The 8th District map approved by the Washington State Redistricting Commission would expand its coverage into more of King County and include a large portion of Snohomish County.
