Red Flag Warnings And Lightning Threaten North Central Washington This Weekend

Fire crews could get another test this weekend, with Red Flag Warnings and the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning with minimal precipitation in north-central Washington.

Warm and dry conditions increased fire activity on Thursday, and Northwest Incident Management Team 12 officials expected similar conditions today in advance of the weather system on Saturday.

Firefighters limited a new fire Thursday near Stormy Mountain Ranch Road to about five acres with an aggressive response. The cause is under investigation.

Northwest Team 12 also took command of the Sisi Fire west of Stehekin. The lightning-caused fire started in mid-July and has grown to approximately 500 in steep terrain

A large plume was visible yesterday, which was the result of the spreading in the Upper Mad River drainage.

In the Entiat drainage, crews continued structure protection work and are focusing on other hot spots that remain. On the western flank of the Little Giant, the structure protection work continues in Plain, Fish Lake, and the Lake Wenatchee areas

Approximately 240 Washington Army National Guard members are helping on the Little Giant Fire and a total of about 1,800 personnel are assigned currently

Boaters are reminded to stay near the shore and clear of firefighting aircraft scooping water from area lakes and rivers.

After 7 weeks, the Little Giant has burned 139,487 acres with 12% containment as of Friday.
