Moses Lake High School has a new mascot.

On Thursday, the Moses Lake school board unanimously voted in favor of the Mavericks as the school’s new mascot.

The moniker was one of five finalists that were selected from over 1,000 submitted to the district’s renaming committee and replaces the school’s original mascot, “Chiefs.”

The school board also took action Thursday to establish “Spartans” as the new mascot for Frontier Middle School – which replaces the former nickname of “Warriors.”

Both changes will go into effect this fall.

The new logos for both schools will be unveiled prior to the 2022-23 school year.

The district is also expected to select a new mascot for Chief Moses Middle School (Braves) in the coming weeks.

The district was required to retire the mascots at each of the three schools after the Colville Tribes denied it permission to continue using those that included Native American titles and imagery.
