Pet owners are advised to gear up for firework celebrations this holiday weekend and implement precautionary measures to keep pets safe and calm. Keep pets inside where they can be secure to avoid them darting out in fear as fireworks can startle them.

"Fireworks are very frightening to most animals and it can take them only a second to bolt out the door," said Renee Parkins, development officer. "Keep them somewhere quiet, maybe play a little music."

Parkins also encourages folks to make sure their pets are licensed and collared with identification.

"We do see a lot of animals Fourth of July weekend at the shelter and we really don't want to see anymore because of firework celebrations," said Parkins.
