The actions of fellow students may have averted tragedy after a 13-year-old at Chief Moses Middle School in Moses Lake allegedly brought a firearm, ammo and a list of potential targets to class Monday morning.

According to the Moses Lake Police Department, multiple students alerted authorities that the 8th-grade suspect allegedly had made comments about shooting up the school.

Officers responded to the classroom and the student was detained. A pistol was allegedly found on his person, as was two loaded magazines of ammo and the list of names.

Moses Lake Police Captain Mike Williams said he's extremely grateful that the students came forward.

"Obviously this could have gone a completely different way had they not spoken up." Williams said, "That takes a lot of fortitude and courage to do so, especially at the age of middle schoolers."

Williams added that the incident was a prime example of 'if you see something, say something.'

The 8th-grader was arrested and eventually booked into the Grant County Juvenile Detention Facility.

It's currently unknown where the student allegedly obtained the pistol.

The Moses Lake School District has not said if the student has been expelled.
