Quincy City Council recently approved the purchase of a new grinding machine for the city's compost center. Roughly 20-30 year ago, the city opted for a waste disposal site for yard debris after compost begin piling up and the original grinder was breaking down as it aged.

"It was time to invest in a new machine, which we took a couple years to do," said Pat Haley, city administrator. "We grind it (yard debris) down to a compost pile, then put water on it and go through the process and create a real, fine fertilizer."

After the yard debris, such as grass clippings and shrubs, is converted into fertilizer, it is then sold to either orchardists or to residents looking for yard fertilizer.

"(Orchardists) are a big user of that because it's very healthy for their trees and other fruit products," said Haley.

The compost facility is located at 18655 Northwest Road 9 and open 8:15-12:15 and 1:15-4:15 on Tuesday through Saturday.
