The House Judiciary Committee voted 23-17 along party lines to send two articles of impeachment to the House. The articles of impeachment accuse President Trump of abusing power and obstructing Congress in the Ukraine scandal. The full House is expected to debate and vote on the articles of impeachment next week.

8th District Congresswoman Kim Schrier released the following statement on the articles of impeachment:

“The people of the 8th district sent me to Congress to bring down the cost of health care, fight for their families, and make thoughtful, evidence-based decisions. I did not come to Congress to impeach the President. However, the evidence before us, including from the President himself, is serious.

The President abused the power of his office to sway the 2020 election in his favor. He put his own political interest above the interests of our nation. And then, when pressed for more information, he refused to cooperate or let key witnesses testify. No one is above the law.

On my first day in office, I took an oath to uphold the Constitution and protect our country. Given all the facts before us, impeachment is the only remedy. No future president should ever believe that this was acceptable behavior.”

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee says the impeachment of a President is a solemn and sad occasion. After the committee voted to send two articles of impeachment to the House, New York Democrat Jerry Nadler said the House will act "expeditiously."

President Trump is ripping the impeachment votes in the House Judiciary Committee. Talking with reporters at the White House, Trump calls impeachment a "very sad thing" for the country, adding it's a sham, a hoax, a witch hunt and an embarrassment.
