North Cascades Highway will close for the season at 6:00 am Wednesday.

The closure is the latest in more than a decade. The stretch of State Route 20 closes every year due to avalanche risk.

The current closure points are from the Ross Dam Trailhead at milepost 134 to the Silver Star Gate at milepost 177. Once significant snow begins to fall, the closure points will be extended to Colonial Creek Campground at milepost 130 to Early Winters Campground at milepost 168.

Hikers, Skiers, snowmobilers and other recreationalists can access the closed portion of the highway during the winter season, although they are advised to check conditions beforehand. Users should park in designated parking areas to allow plow drivers the space they need to clear snow around the closed stretch's access gates.

WSDOT will begin clearing work to reopen the route around March of 2020.
