A two vehicle collision on eastbound I-90 just after 8:00 am Monday resulted in two fatalities and two counts of vehicular homicide.

Trooper John Bryant said two unbuckled occupants in a 2001 Chevy Cavalier may have been moments from checking under the hood of their car, which was pulled over on the side of the interstate just before exit 70 to Easton.

"Another vehicle then came around the corner." Bryant explained, "At this point we don't know if the vehicle, which was a larger pickup, was taking the exit or it just was not paying attention. It kind of drifted off of the roadway onto the shoulder. It basically struck the sedan from behind, which was in a stationary position, and pushed it almost all the way to the beginning of the exit off-ramp."

Bryant said the 2004 Chevy Silverado pickup struck the sedan at freeway speeds.

Both occupants of the Cavalier died at the scene.

"Unless your really have to pull over for some reason because your car breaks down, the shoulder of the interstate is not a safe place. We've had a lot of collisions there. We've had trooper vehicles get struck there," Bryant added.

The driver of the Silverado, 58-year-old David J. McFarland of Lynnwood, was uninjured but determined to be under the influence and was taken into custody. Following a blood draw, McFarland was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide because the sedan's occupants were still in the vehicle. Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division are now investigating the collision.

The identities of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
