Chelan County PUD is bracing itself to delay the rate increases that were expected to go into effect June 1. Conversation from Chelan PUD commissioners at the board meeting Monday resulted in staff being directed to prepare a resolution for a six month delay on the rate increase.

"The conversation yesterday was we're really at this moment, as a customer owned utility, focused on what's important to our customers," said Steve Wright, general manager. "The near term has become really important."

The commissioners had approved rate increases over the span of five years in February. According to Wright, the rate strategies were long term strategies.

"And I'd say what COVID-19 has done, is created a real short term need," said Wright.

The PUD is not conducting shutoffs of utility services and waiving late fees until April 27. Commissioners will re-evaluate in mid-April to see if this will be extended beyond the 27th.
