The Grant County Board of Commissioners is expressing strong support for local Ukrainian residents.

KPQ news partner i FIBER ONE reports the board has issued a proclamation condemning the Russian invasion and acts of violence against Ukrainians, while standing with the country's people.

The proclamation also expresses sympathy and support of the county's Slavic citizens.

Roughly, a thousand citizens in Grant County are Ukrainian, with most living in the Soap Lake/Ephrata, Moses Lake and Coulee City areas.

More than 1 million people have fled Ukraine since the invasion began.

“Both the Ukrainian military and their citizens have been targeted for death and destruction in this conflict, and many of Grant County’s Slavic citizens, especially our Ukrainian neighbors, are experiencing great pain and anxiety over this urgent and difficult situation,” Grant County’s Board of Commissioners stated in their proclamation.
