A significant column of smoke could be seen in South Wenatchee Friday morning.

An illegal debris pile burn turned into a brush fire in the 10 block of Boodry Street after the wind blew embers into some grass, sparking the quarter-acre blaze.

Chelan County Fire District 1 Captain John Brown said it's not really a surprise when a fire such as the one Friday puts up a lot of smoke.

"Especially this time of year there can be a lot of smoke, because there's still a lot of moisture in the fuel. When it heats up it's giving off that moisture." Brown explained, "So you will see a lot of smoke even though it's not burning very fast or very rapid."

Outdoor burning is not allowed within the Wenatchee Urban Growth Boundary. Friday was also a no-burn day.
