Port of Mattawa announced that the Grant County Sheriff's Office is the newest tenant with deputies using the additional office space as a substation for the rural Mattawa and southwest Grant County areas.

"The port and south Grant County as a whole has been growing astronomically and we're seeing more people, more activity," said Lars Leland, Port of Mattawa executive director. "The closest (Sheriff's) office is in George which, for an officer, is 30 to 40 miles to Mattawa, so we're very isolated."

The office space, located at 201040 Road 24 Southwest, connects deputies to the community and provides a conference room. Staff won't be on site daily, however deputies on patrol in the area will use the office space.

"This is just a fantastic opportunity and allows the deputies a reprieve of somewhere they can stop real quick and do paperwork in," said Leland. "Just not feel so isolated while they're down in the area."

The lease is set to start July 1.
