Spokane Man Dies Hiking in Alpine Lakes Wilderness

A 19-year-old Spokane man died on a hike in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness near Three Queens. The Kittitas County Sheriff's Office says Sean Mortensen was hiking with his brother and a friend over the Labor Day weekend when he went for a solo hike Friday morning and did not return. The two other hikers searched for Mortensen but did not locate him. On Saturday, his brother went to the trailhead and called for help. Search and Rescue crews went to the area to try and find Mortensen, but did not locate him until Sunday and believe he fell about 150 feet down a slope. Kittitas County Search and Rescue was assisted by a helicopter from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
