Chelan County Fire District 1 and Douglas County Fire District 2 spokesperson Kay McKellar earned the Washington State Fire Fighters' Association Volunteer Support Person of the Year award Saturday.

Chelan 1 Chief Brian Brett said that typically a fire department nominates one person and a review committee selects the winner.

"In the case of Kay McKellar she has served so many fire districts in our region for so long that she was nominated by six fire departments." Brett said, "It was definitely a privilege of mine to get to present her with the award."

McKellar also worked 30 years for Rivercom as a dispatcher on top of her commitments to the local fire districts.

Chelan County Fire District 1 also took home an honor after it was given the Fire House Award.

Brett said the district has been blessed by all the community support they've received over the years.

"We're enjoying the blessing of two new fire facilities, one in downtown Wenatchee and one in Squilchuck. Just finishing the strategic buildout of our facilities in strategic locations." Brett continued, "Our constituents support us and we couldn't be more grateful."

Specifically, Chelan County 1 was recognized for its commitment to the annual Fire Fighters' Association conference by providing apparatus, facilities and equipment.
