State Superintendent is Dropping in to Observe the Dual Language Program at Lewis & Clark Elementary

Lewis & Clark principal Alfonso Lopez connected with state school superintendent, Chris Reykdal, to extend an invite to observe first hand Lewis & Clark's dual-language program. Reykdal will be at the elementary school touring  on Tuesday, October 22 from 8 until noon.

"Really the purpose behind his visit is to take a look firsthand and see the work that's being done at our dual language school Lewis and Clark," said Diana Haglund, WSD communications director.

The bilingual education program is a highlight of the Wenatchee School District and this was made evident recently when Lopez was named the 2018-2019 Washington State Principal of the Year by the Association of Washington School Principals for his work promoting cultural diversity among other accomplishments.

"It's just a great opportunity for the state superintendent to see his work and the work of all of his staff and what those outcomes are for students in that dual language program," said Haglund.

During Reykdal's visit he will tour the school and observe kindergarten, first grade and fourth grade dual language classrooms. He will also attend a third grade assembly and finish his visit with a lunch in the cafeteria.

"He wants to see how the dual language program works in this school as he's pushing for more bilingual lessons in the state," said Principal Lopez.

Back in 2017, WSD received $15,800 in grant money to enhance dual language instruction. WSD has the program at Lewis & Clark and also a dual-language class at Foothills Middle School.

"We are going to have an assembly at 9 where people can come and be a witness to what we present and have a chance to hear the superintendent," said Lopez.
