The Wenatchee School District (WSD) is changing its policy regarding student marijuana consumption on campus.

Superintendent Paul Gordon said that, during the policy's first reading Tuesday night, several concerns were brought up by the school board.

"The biggest issues were ensuring that we have a medical diagnosis from a doctor, that the student has a medical marijuana card, and that parents are the ones administering it." Gordon explained, "No school personnel can administer it, ensuring that we're following the letter of the law one hundred percent and there's no deviation from that."

The policy became necessary for the district after state legislation mandated the changes. Eastmont made a similar change to its policy last year.

"This is a new law that we're just adhering to. The Washington state legislation specifically provides that parents of a child diagnosed with a terminal or debilitating condition can administer a marijuana-infused product to support their child."

WSD is following the state's laws on this issue. However, since marijuana is illegal federally and the district receives some federal funding that could theoretically be lost due to the new policy, Gordon believes a conversation needs to occur between state and federal officials.

Gordon added that the district's responsibility in this is to ensure no one is abusing the policy, and to provide a place on school grounds for parents to administer marijuana infused products to their child.
