Douglas County Fire District 2 celebrated the end of National Fire Prevention Week with their annual open house. PIO Kay McKellar says they've been doing open houses at fire stations nationwide for nearly 100 years.

"The theme this year is, 'Not every hero wears a cape.' If you look around, there's a lot of heroes here today with our firefighters, our volunteers, our support division. Everyone's here helping out to put on this event for our community."

There were activities for kids and adults alike, a magic show, opportunities to meet the firefighters and see a lot of the fire equipment. There were even rides in a open-top pumper truck.

McKellar says they also had a lot of great information to be safer for both kids and adults in the home.

"You can look around and see lots of different booths for the children to get to meet the firemen. We get some public information out to the parents about fire safety, home inspections, smoke detectors."

McKellar called the event a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and meet the fireman and there are always a lot of calls asking when the open house takes place.
