Earlier this year in March, city of Cashmere's Sherman Water Reservoir had a failing roof and the month of October marks the beginning of that replacement process. The preliminary work occurs this week, meaning the draining of the tank for the reservoir is being conducted the week of September 30th.

"We have to drain that tank completely and take it offline so it will no longer be part of the water system," said Mayor Jim Fletcher. "So today (Monday, September 30), they're putting in some valves and pipes so we can actually bypass that Sherman Reservoir tank and pump water further up the hill to the Kennedy Reservoir."

According to Fletcher, in roughly mid-October, the contractor, Bethlehem Construction will start disassembling the former, failed roof. Steel and wood trusses in the center of the roof caused the roof to sag after breaking. The disassembling process is a cautionary measure to ensure debris doesn't fall inside the tank and possibly scratching or damaging the tank.

"The notice to the public, there will be a lot more truck traffic, probably with larger trucks, up and down Olive Street and Chase Street to get to the site and haul away the debris," said Mayor Fletcher.

Sherman Water Reservoir is located on Cedar Street. Once the disassembling process is completed, an inspection of the interior of the tank is planned to ensure no preventive maintenance needs to be done. The prep work which includes the installation of support structures for the cement roof will occur on the heels of the inspection.

"That new roof will probably last 100 years," said Mayor Fletcher. "We hope to be done with pretty much everything construction wise by the middle of December and finishing clean up work and sanitizing the tank probably in January."

There should be no interruption to the community's water supply during the construction process.
