Drivers with excess items in tow, such as heading to the refuse station to get rid of waste, are reminded to secure the load. This reminder is especially emphasized during the week of October 19th through the 23rd which is Secure Your Load week.

"The importance of your load is public safety, number one. When things fall out of vehicles, it can go through windshields, hurt people, cause collisions, hitting debris can be fatal," said Sergeant Darren Wright.

The other element to keep in mind when opting to tarp, tie or strap up a load is the effort to keep the state clean. If folks opt to not secure their load or not do so properly, there's different levels of fines.

"Even if nothing falls out, if it's not secure you can be cited," said Sergeant Wright. "If things actually fall out of a vehicle...that's an even more significant load. That's about $288."

If someone is injured or killed due to an unsecure load, criminal penalties could be the result.
