In honor of Black History Month, Wenatchee Valley College will present Javoen Byrd from Awodi Drumming on Zoom on Thursday, Feb. 24 at noon. This event is free and open to the public.

Awodi Drummings’ “The Wisdom of the Drum” program offers a look into how African drumming was used as a tool of resistance during the enslavement of African peoples in the U.S. The Zoom meeting link is wvc.zoom.us/j/89154268389 and the Zoom meeting ID is 891 5426 8389.

Javoen Byrd, ethnomusicologist and owner of Awodi Drumming will talk about various slave rebellions in the United States that utilized African drums as a tool of resistance. He will also share his journey as the first African American to be initiated back into the Ayan drum society of Nigeria in the last 350 years.
