WSDOT Provides Funding to Cashmere for Safer Pedestrian Traffic
The city of Cashmere has a local funding agreement with Washington State Department of Transportation for the 'Safe Routes to School' grant. The funding total is roughly $180,000 to improve school crosswalks.
"The Safe Routes to School grant will help Cashmere install along Pioneer Avenue, between the elementary school and Tigner, up to the high school, four crosswalks with flashing lights," said Mayor Jim Fletcher. "To warn motorists that there are kids crossing the street or about to be crossing the street to slow them down."
Improvements supported by the grant funding will include flashing beacon signs, high visibility stripping, curb ramps and advance warning signs, according to the council packet.
At Monday evening's council meeting, the council will vote on whether to approve the agreement officially in order to receive the funds.
"What we want to really encourage is that the kids feel safe walking to school and therefore encourage more walking to school," said Mayor Fletcher.
